Since these pellets are made from wood that has already been harvested for another purpose and are burned in a significantly more efficient gasifier, one 30-kg bag displaces more than its own weight in charcoal \u2013 and, when the losses incurred during charcoal production are taken into account, several times that amount in standing forest.<\/p><p><b>From sawmill waste to clean cooking fuel <\/b><span style=\"font-family: Montserrat, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal;\">\u2014<\/span><b>\u00a0<i>ECS<\/i>&#8216; tale of circular economy<\/b><\/p><p>&#8220;Our pellets start in Zambia&#8217;s planted forests. ZAFFICO, the forestry plantation company, manages large eucalyptus and pine plantations that are harvested and replanted on rotation \u2014 these are working plantations grown for timber, not natural woodland.\u00a0<\/p><p>A network of small-scale sawmillers buys logs from these plantations and cuts them into planks for the construction and furniture trade. \u00a0Sawing a round log into square planks leaves a great deal behind: slabs, edgings, trimmings and offcuts, typically 40% of the log by volume.\u00a0<\/p><p>For a small sawmiller this material has no market. It piles up in the yard, gets burned in the open, or is left to rot. It is, in the ordinary sense of the word, waste. \u00a0We collect it.\u00a0<\/p><p>Our teams work directly with the sawmillers, load the offcuts onto a large trailer and haul them to our pellet factory in Ndola, in Zambia&#8217;s Copperbelt. The sawmiller gets a clear yard and an outlet for a by-product he cannot otherwise shift; we get our raw material. \u00a0<\/p><p>At the factory the offcuts go through four steps. They are fed into a wood chipper, which breaks the pieces down to a uniform chip. The chips pass through a hammer mill, which grinds them to a fine, consistent particle size. That material is then pressed through a die under high pressure, where the wood&#8217;s own lignin softens and binds the particles into dense cylindrical pellets \u2014 no glue, no additives, nothing but wood and heat. The pellets are then cooled, screened and bagged. \u00a0<\/p><p>From there they go to households. Our customers cook on the SupaMoto stove, a clean-burning gasifier that we lend to the household rather than sell, and they buy pellets in bags as they need them, paying by mobile money. For most families this is around half the cost of the charcoal they were buying before, in a form that is cleaner to burn and easier to handle. \u00a0What makes this more than a tidy recycling story is what sits at the other end of it. Charcoal in Zambia is made by felling natural hardwood woodland and burning it slowly in earth kilns \u2014 a process so wasteful that roughly six kilos of standing hardwood go into every kilo of charcoal that reaches a kitchen.\u00a0<\/p><p>Our pellets, by contrast, are made from wood already cut for another purpose, and the gasifier burns them far more efficiently than an open brazier burns charcoal. So one 30-kg bag of pellets displaces more than its own weight in charcoal \u2014 and, once the kiln losses are counted back, many times that again in living forest. The company was founded in <b>2012<\/b> with the idea of <b>replacing charcoal with pellets made from waste biomass for cooking.<\/b> The founders were invited by the Swedish Embassy from Europe to Zambia to present their idea. Inspired by the people, opportunities, and the country, they chose Zambia to establish their business.<\/p><p><i>ECS<\/i>\u00a0is a <b>distributor and manufacturer <\/b>of<b>\u00a0cooking solutions<\/b> for households, restaurants, and institutions, with the vision of making <b>clean cooking solutions affordable and accessible for all Zambian households<\/b>, reducing deforestation, and mitigating negative climate impacts.<\/p><p>The company distributes <b>microgasification stoves <\/b>under the <b>SupaMoto brand<\/b> and is also a manufacturer and distributor of its <b>own microgasification stoves, the SupaMoto Microgasifying Biomass Stove 4kW, and SupaMoto-Pellets<\/b>. The pellets are produced from waste generated by pine and eucalyptus plantations at the <i>ECS<\/i> production facility in Ndola, Zambia.
