Another portion of the loan will be used to<b> import solar home systems<\/b> for distribution to low-income households in rural areas. This includes serving <b>50,000 existing customers<\/b> in central Kenya. Replacing charcoal stoves with electric cooking devices results in <b>up to 154.23\u20ac in financial savings<\/b> and replacing them with biomass stoves in <b>up to 159.36\u20ac financial savings for one customer per year <\/b>which represents a large saving in relation to the average annual income in Kenya. Additionally, the cooking alternatives result in <b>208 hours of time saved per year <\/b>in cooking-related activities for a cookstove customer. This allows families to redirect resources and time toward education and income-generating activities. \n \nThe <b>Green Churches movement <\/b>initiated by <i>Mwangaza Light<\/i> has strengthened <b>co-operation between different churches<\/b> and <b>environmental awareness<\/b>, especially within the <b>Anglican Church of Kenya <\/b>through the Green Anglicans movement. In addition, the <b>Green Churches movement <\/b>in Kenya is promoting <b>eco-theology <\/b>and creating a deeper understanding of the link between religion and nature. This reliance on traditional fuels contributes to <b>severe indoor air pollution<\/b>, which leads to an <b>estimated <\/b><\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/citizen.digital\/business\/project-to-enable-16-million-kenyan-households-adopt-clean-cooking-using-improved-cookstoves-n316617\" target=\"_blank\"><b>21,560 deaths annually <\/b><\/a><\/u><span data-contrast=\"none\">due to respiratory illnesses caused by smoke exposure. Furthermore, the use of charcoal and firewood is a significant driver of deforestation and environmental degradation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When it comes to electricity, around&nbsp;<\/span><u><b><a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/EG.ELC.ACCS.RU.ZS?end=2022&amp;locations=KE&amp;start=1993&amp;view=chart\" target=\"_blank\">70% of the population<\/a><\/b><\/u><span data-contrast=\"none\"> has access to electricity, but this figure <b>drops to 30% in rural areas<\/b>. Most rural households are off-grid, meaning they lack reliable access to electricity for basic needs such as lighting and cooking. This gap in clean energy access highlights the <b>urgent need for sustainable solutions<\/b> that can reduce environmental harm and improve health outcomes across the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><i>Mwangaza Light<\/i>, a Kenyan <b>faith-based social enterprise<\/b>, is addressing these challenges by providing clean, affordable energy solutions for underserved communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><i>Mwangaza Light<\/i> plans to use the loan for the <b>purchase of induction stoves and electric pressure cookers<\/b>, aimed at replacing charcoal stoves in urban and peri-urban households.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> This aligns with <i>Mwangaza Light&#8217;s <\/i>strategic focus on addressing the growing demand for electric cooking solutions in the urban on-grid market. This includes serving 50,000 existing customers in central Kenya who have already transitioned from traditional open fireplaces to rocket stoves. These households are targeted because they have already shown a willingness to adopt cleaner energy solutions, making them more likely to embrace solar home systems as the next step.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">These efforts will help <i>Mwangaza Light <\/i>continue its mission of guiding off-grid households up the clean energy ladder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In addition, part of the loan will be used to finance the company&#8217;s school kitchen programme, the construction of two new offices, an IT update and IT support for the company&#8217;s e-commerce platform and administrative costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><u>The school kitchen programme:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Most <b>school kitchens<\/b> in Kenya use <b>open fires<\/b> to prepare meals for the many pupils. This contributes significantly to <b>deforestation<\/b> and the kitchens are often <b>simple huts<\/b> full of <b>smoke and soot<\/b>. <b>Churches<\/b> run around <b>50% of educational institutions<\/b> in Kenya and are keen to switch to <b>modern cooking methods<\/b> &#8211; both <b>for environmental reasons<\/b> and to <b>improve working conditions<\/b> for the school cooks and the <b>quality of nutrition<\/b> for the pupils. <i>Mwangaza Light<\/i> is in a unique position to work with church-run schools to provide affordable <b>technology<\/b> for <b>institutional cooking<\/b>. This allows the company to contribute to the development of the emerging market for institutional cooking solutions.<\/p>\n<p><u>e-commerce platform:<\/u><\/p>\n<p><i>Mwangaza Light<\/i> is currently developing an <b>e-commerce platform<\/b> to supply <b>urban<\/b> and <b>peri-urban markets<\/b> with <b>electric cookstoves<\/b>. Founded by two women in 2014, the organization was created to alleviate energy poverty among rural, low-income households by providing better access to solar energy and clean cooking solutions. <i>Mwangaza Light<\/i> is a women-led enterprise with 25 full-time staff and over 50 commission agents, with women making up more than 75% of the organization at all levels.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Recognizing that churches are among the most trusted institutions in East Africa and possess extensive infrastructure, <i>Mwangaza Light <\/i>developed the Green Churches model. This model is designed to reach both urban and rural populations, men and women alike, at national and grassroots levels. The Green Churches initiative serves two key purposes: it empowers churches to take on environmental stewardship, promote energy access, and lead climate action in Kenya; and it integrates last-mile distribution of clean energy solutions into church infrastructure. Clergy raise awareness &#8220;from the pulpit,&#8221; while laypeople provide access to information, products, and services for congregants and the broader community. Additionally, Green Churches support tree planting initiatives, contributing to livelihoods, food security, and water security as part of their climate action efforts.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><i>Mwangaza Light<\/i> has laid the foundation for an environmental movement in Kenya. At the national level, the enterprise collaborates closely with the Anglican Church of Kenya, co-branding cookstoves to foster clergy ownership and promotion of clean energy technologies. Locally, Green Churches have established ecumenical collaborations, shifting the clergy\u2019s mindset to &#8220;talk green&#8221; (promote Creation Care\/environmental protection), &#8220;go green&#8221; (encourage the adoption of clean energy to reduce CO2 emissions), and &#8220;grow green&#8221; (run tree nurseries for income generation).
